Where
should I keep my Plants?
You
can keep your orchid plant indoors on a windowsill, coffee
table, or desk in your home or office. Your Tallandsias
& Bromeliads are the perfect companion plants for your
orchids & are quite happy living amongst them!
How
often should I water my Plants?
Each
orchid plant and home environment has its own characteristics.
Generally, orchids should be watered every 5 to 12 days
depending on time of year. During the warm summer months
more frequent watering is needed than in the cooler winter
months. Please see our Care Info page for more details.
There are two types of orchids offered
by Orchid Select
- Phalaenopsis, Jewel, Dendrobiums, Oncidium, and
Brassia should be allowed to dry slightly between waterings.
- Miltonia, Odontoglossoms and Pathiopedilum should
be kept evenly moist. Do not allow to dry out.
- Always make sure that adequate drainage exists.
If your orchid arrives in a decorative basket or container
always remove the inner plant container to water. After
your plant has fully drained, you may return it to its
decorative container.
Be sure to follow the care instructions included with
your shipment.
Our Succulents, Tillandsias & Bromeliads require minimal
care.
Succulents & Bromeliads should be allowed to dry out
between watering, while Tillandsias benefit from higher
humidity & should be misted more frequently.
See your care instructions included with your shipment.
Should
I use plant food?
We
recommend & offer specially formulated fertilizers (plant
food) to promote growth & stimulate reblooming. Jack's
Classic (powder) or Dyna-Gro "Grow" (liquid) plant
foods are an all-purpose food suitable for all houseplants.
Dyna-Gro "Bloom" (liquid) plant food initiates
budding & promotes full blooms. Superthrive is fomulated
to provide essential trace elements to ensure healthy strong
plants. See our accessories/supplies section for ordering.
Which
orchid plants are the hardiest and have the longest lasting
flowers?
Phalaenopsis
and Dendrobiums have very long lasting flowers, typically
the flowers will last 2 to 3 months with some blooms lasting
up to 6 month long.
Will
my orchid plant be flowering when it arrives?
Our
orchid plants are shipped in partial bloom & bud, so
that they may be enjoyed from the moment they arrive. Our
orchids are full size specimen plants, and come dressed
with live green moss, decorative basket or container &
stakes. They make the perfect gift for any occasion!
My
orchid plant has not re-bloomed. Why?
The
most common reason that plants do not rebloom is that they
are not receiving the proper amount of filtered light. To
ensure proper care, be sure to follow the specific instructions
that were included with your order. We suggest & offer
a wonderful book, "Success with Orchids", for
more detailed growing information on many species of orchids.
When
should I repot my orchid plant?
Your
orchid plant should be repotted every two years or when
it has outgrown it's original pot. Orchids must be repotted
using special potting medium, such as orchid bark, or sphagnum
moss. See our accessories/supplies section for ordering.
Should
I remove the bamboo stake from my orchid plant?
Please
follow all the unpacking instructions included with each
plant. Many orchids gracefully arc showing the true beauty
of their flowers. The flower spike should not cause the
plant to fall over. Proper staking will eliminate this problem.
What
do I do when my orchid plant stops blooming?
For phalaenopsis, cut the flower spike just below the
lowest flower bud scar and above the node below that point.
For all other types of orchid plants, remove the flower
stem after the flowers have all fallen off.
If you notice any leaves turning yellow, simply cut them
off close to the base of the plant. This is normal for orchid
plants & generally you will find new growth shortly
afterwards.
Do
you offer grower plants?
We do offer our full size specimen plants as grower plants
after they have completed their blooming cycle. If you are
interested in grower plants, please call us for availability
& pricing.
