Caring Information

You'll be surprised how long orchids stay in bloom. Depending on the variety, a properly cared for orchid can bloom from 2 weeks to 2 months, or longer!
You do not need a green thumb to care for your orchid. Many people mistakenly believe that orchids are fragile or difficult to care for. Today's orchids are bred & grown to be stronger, hardier-and flourish with no more care than an ordinary houseplant.
Each orchid plant and home have their own characteristics. In general, orchids should be watered every 5 to 12 days depending on time of year. Conditions such as warm temperatures, air conditioning & dry winter heat, will all require more frequent watering.
There are two types of orchids offered by Orchid Select:

  1. Phalaenopsis, Jewel, Dendrobiums, Oncidium, and Brassia should be allowed to dry slightly between waterings.

  2. Miltonia, Odontoglossoms and Pathiopedilum should be kept evenly moist. Do not allow to dry out.

There is no general rule of thumb for any one orchid or environment. It will depend on the heat and humidity conditions of atmosphere where you display your orchid.
Here are some useful tips, however, to keep your plants healthy:

  • Temperatures of your home/office should be more than adequate to keep your flower healthy, with daytime temperature ranging from 65 degrees to 80 degrees and nighttime temperature ranging from 55 degrees to 70 degrees.

  • Humidity should be around 70 percent. If your humidity does fall well below 70 percent you may want to mist the plant.

  • Always make sure that adequate drainage exists. If your plant is in a decorative basket be sure to remove the inner plant container to water.

  • After the water has stopped dripping it is ok to place it back in the basket.
